KISORO – The Chairperson of the Kigezi Regional Potato Organization, Fidel Kamari, has called on the government to establish modern, standardized storage facilities for potato farmers to prevent losses.
Kamari, who also serves as the chairperson of the Kisoro District Potato Growers’ Cooperative Union Company, consisting of 12 cooperatives in the district, highlighted that 90% of residents in the Kigezi sub-region are involved in Irish potato cultivation, either for home consumption or commercial purposes.
According to Kamari, many farmers have experienced seed losses during the storage period due to inadequate storage facilities, resulting in financial setbacks. He advised farmers to maintain clean storage facilities with raised racks providing sufficient airflow to keep Irish potatoes under optimal conditions, ensuring their viability for multiple planting seasons.
Kamari emphasized the importance of training farmers in modern farming and storage techniques to increase commercialization but also enhance food security in both urban and rural areas.
