The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) will soon open a branch in Kisoro District to improve access to tax services for businessmen and landlords, officials have announced.
‎
‎The development was confirmed by Peter Besigamukama, the URA Southwestern Regional Manager for Domestic Taxes, during a one-day workshop held Thursday at Ikoro Hotel in Kisoro.
‎
‎Besigamukama said taxpayers in Kisoro have long been forced to travel to Kabale to pay taxes or seek guidance, a challenge the new office is expected to resolve.
He said the branch will bring services closer to the people and improve tax compliance in the district.
‎
‎He also urged the business community to support the fight against smuggling through cross-border routes with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, warning that illegal trade undermines national development.
‎
He pledged continued engagement with communities at Chanika and Bunagana border posts, alongside customs and tax education officials, to address persistent concerns.

During the meeting, some traders raised grievances over unfair competition. Habimana Emmanuel, Director of K-Net Soda Depot, said his business had stalled because Congolese traders use transit routes to import sodas into the DRC, leaving his stock to expire.
He appealed to URA to intervene so that local traders can remain profitable and meet their tax obligations.
