KABALE: Police in Kabale District are hunting for a suspect who allegedly assaulted an 11-month-old girl, resulting in her death.
The suspect, identified as Bernard Nyetunge, allegedly assaulted Evas Kyakunzire, a resident of Kamukungu Cell, Kisasa Parish, Kamuganguzi Sub-County in Kabale District. According to a police statement, Nyetunge has a history of domestic violence, often triggered by alcohol consumption. His family members have reported him to local leaders multiple times, leading to counseling and temporary resolutions.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, reported that on Saturday at around 2:00 AM, Nyetunge returned home drunk and became violent, attacking everyone in the house. During the chaos, one of his daughters, Atuheire Bridget, fled the house carrying her sister, baby Evas, on her back. Nyetunge pursued them outside the fence and struck the baby on the head with a stick. The baby was taken to a health center, where she was pronounced dead.
Maate added that information about the incident spread until the Officer in Charge (O/C) of Katuna Police Station was informed, who then notified the O/C CID Kabale, leading to the incident being officially registered. The crime scene was visited and documented, but no arrest has been made as the suspect is on the run. Investigations are ongoing, and efforts to apprehend Nyetunge continue.
