Kanungu Man Arrested for Killing Villager over Suspected Theft

The suspect, Ivan Byomuhangi, commonly known as Katama, is accused of killing Swaleh Bengenzaki, a resident of Kyijanga village, Rutugunda parish, Kirima Sub County.

According to a police statement, on Sunday, July 28, 2024, at about 2:00 PM at Kyijanga trading center, the suspect assaulted the deceased, suspecting him of stealing thirty thousand shillings (UGX) from his pocket. The suspect later recovered the money from his wife. After realizing his mistake, the suspect apologized to the victim and bought him a bottle of soda and a stick of roasted meat.

The victim was initially treated at a drug shop in Kyijanga trading center and taken home. However, his condition worsened, and he passed away on Wednesday at about 8:00 PM.

Elly Maate, the Kigezi region police spokesperson, reported that the crime scene was visited and documented, relevant witness statements were recorded, and the suspect was arrested and detained at Kanungu Central Police Station.

Maate adds that the deceased’s body was examined at Kanungu Health Center IV and handed over to his relatives for a proper burial.
