KISORO – The Kisoro Chief Magistrate court, presided over by His Worship Keneth Komakech has today sentenced seven men to one year in jail each for the consumption of opium.
The convictions stemmed from an incident on October 31, 2023, when the individuals were discovered with opium in Southern Division, Kisoro Municipality.
The seven convicts, aged in their 18s, were identified as Turinayo Joshua, Irankunda Emmanuel, Nizeyimana Brain, Nsengiyumva Innocent, Ndaruhutse N, Muhumuza Gerald, and Halerimana James.
During the proceedings, the prosecution, led by Ellen Nambi, the prosecutor, urged the court to impose a punitive sentence, highlighting the prevalence of such cases in society. In response, the convicts pleaded for leniency, asserting that it was their first-time offense involving opium.
After carefully considering arguments from both sides, His Worship Komakech disclosed that the convicts had been in remand for one month and 20 days.
Subsequently, he handed down a sentence of one year in jail for each individual, to be served at Kisoro government prison.
