KISORO – The Grade One Magistrate Court in Kisoro District, presided over by His Worship Dismas Muchelule, has sentenced David Habimana, in his 20s, to 1 year, 11 months, and 21 days in jail for theft.
Habimana, a resident of Buzaniro village, Nyundo Sub County, Kisoro District, was convicted for blocking Vicent Barisigara’s house on September 9, 2023.
On the same day, he stole Barisigara’s 3 sacks of sorghum, 3 hoes, 1 chair, and spraying material for agriculture, totaling 750,000 shillings.
Additionally, on October 24, 2023, he blocked Barisigara’s store and stole 6 iron sheets, 1 sack of charcoal, 3 sacks of maize, and 1 sack of Irish potatoes, amounting to 800,000 shillings.
Prosecutor Ellen Nambi argued that the multiple offenses required a significant penalty, urging the court to provide a lenient sentence.
The complainant, Vicent Barisigara, requested a substantial punishment, citing the convict’s possession of weapons used during these criminal acts.
During the court proceedings, Habimana contested the first three cases but admitted guilt in the fourth case.
His Worship Muchelule based the sentence on the fourth case, imposing a 23-month and 21-day jail term, along with a compensation order of 750,000 shillings to be paid after completing the sentence.
His Worship Muchelule stated that the other cases would be addressed within the next 21 days.
