Police in Kisoro District have arrested a 24-year-old man, identified as Andrew Kwizera, for the alleged murder of his 72-year-old mother, Molly Nyirabirihanze.
Both were residents of Rukoro Village, Rukoro Ward in Kyanika Town Council.
Nyirabirihanze was killed while intervening and protecting her daughter-in-law on Tuesday night. Kwizera allegedly picked up a wooden stick and struck his mother on the head, causing severe injuries that resulted in excessive bleeding and, ultimately, her death.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, confirmed the arrest and stated that a murder case file has been opened to guide investigations.
He added that the crime scene was visited, documented, and processed. Statements from eyewitnesses were recorded, and the suspected murder weapon, a blood-stained wooden stick was recovered as evidence.
The body was taken to Kisoro Hospital for a postmortem examination before being handed over to the family for a decent burial.
Maate said that inquiries are ongoing and that once investigations are complete, the suspect will be presented in court to face prosecution.
