KISORO: Police in Kisoro District on Monday arrested 16 girls in connection with the abandonment of a dead baby near their hostels.
The suspects, whose names have been withheld, were detained by officers from Gatimba Community Police Post in Kisoro Municipality. The arrests followed the discovery of a deceased baby in a nearby plantation, with some parts of the body apparently eaten by dogs.
The baby was found near the suspects’ residence in the Nalongo Building, located in Kamonyi Village, Northern Division, Kisoro Municipality.
OC Kalan Zadok of Gatimba Community Police Post, together with Daud Line, the LC1 Chairperson of Kamonyi Village, noted that this was not the first time a dead baby had been found in the area. Zadok urged young girls to use condoms as a preventive measure during sex to avoid unwanted pregnancies and the potential complications that could lead to deaths during abortion procedures.
Daud Line expressed concern about the presence of unregistered individuals in his village, calling on sex workers residing in the area to register for proper accountability. He emphasized the importance of safe delivery for pregnant girls, discouraging the promotion of abortion as a solution.
