Police in Lira are pursuing a man suspected of fatally stabbing his wife during a domestic dispute that reportedly stemmed from suspicion over photos on a smartphone.
The victim, 39-year-old Evelyn Atoo, a resident of Alit Village in Awiodyek Sub-county, was allegedly attacked on Thursday evening by her husband, Bonny Olungu, after he reportedly discovered photos of two men on her phone and suspected she was involved in an extramarital relationship.
The woman is said to have explained that the photos were of her son and his friend, but tensions escalated when the suspect allegedly attempted to smash the phone, leading to a physical struggle during which she was stabbed.
Atoo was rushed to Emmanuel Medical Clinic but was pronounced dead around 9pm after losing excessive blood.
The North Kyoga regional police confirmed the incident, saying the scene was documented and statements were recorded. A knife believed to have been used in the attack was recovered as an exhibit.
Patrick Jimmy Okema, the regional police spokesperson, said the body was transferred to Lira Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination. Police have intensified efforts to locate the suspect, who remains at large.
Authorities have urged communities to report any information that could help in the arrest of the suspect as investigations continue.
