RUKUNGIRI: Police in Rukungiri District have arrested an 18-year-old man in connection with the death of a two-year and five-month-old infant, as investigations into the tragic incident continue.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, confirmed the arrest, identifying the suspect as Vincent Nuwamanya. He is alleged to have played a key role in the murder of Ayesiga Shiana, the daughter of Michael Tugume, a resident of Omukacundezi Cell, Kisizi Parish, Nyarushanje Sub-County, Rukungiri District.
According to Maate, the incident occurred on Tuesday at around 7:00 PM. Kwarikunda Sofia, the infant’s mother, had been looking for her daughter, who had been playing with other children near their home, but could not find her. She immediately alerted neighbors and began a search for her missing child.
Tragically, the mother discovered her daughter’s body about 30 meters from their home. The child’s arms and legs had been tied with banana fibers, and she had suffered gruesome injuries, with her intestines protruding from her private parts.
Overcome with grief, Kwarikunda raised an alarm, drawing local residents to the scene. Police and local leaders were quickly notified.
Maate confirmed that the case was registered at Kisizi Lower Police Post, the crime scene was thoroughly examined and documented and post-mortem was also conducted.
