RUKUNGIRI: Police in Rukungiri District are investigating the murder of Tumuramye Evat, a 34-year-old resident of Nyakahanga Cell, Masya Parish in Nyakagyeme Sub-County, who was assaulted and left to die under unclear circumstances.
The incident occurred Friday night in Nyakahanga A Cell, Masya Parish. According to preliminary police reports, Tumuramye was last seen alive at around 9:30 p.m. at Omukayaga Trading Centre in Bugangari Sub-County, where he had been drinking at a bar owned by Mugume Christopher Karugaba.
Eyewitnesses claim Tumuramye was intoxicated and incapacitated, prompting the bar owner to carry him outside and lay him on the grass to “get some fresh air.” The bar was then left under the supervision of a maid, Amanya Promise.
Later that night, at around 11 p.m., two bar bosses, identified as Brian and Twesigye Dononzio, found Tumuramye still lying outside. According to witnesses, Brian urinated on Tumuramye while berating him for remaining in the same spot. Brian allegedly threatened to assault Tumuramye if he found him there again.
Staggering, Tumuramye reportedly got up and headed in the direction of his home. However, his body was discovered the next morning at around 8 a.m. by a local resident, Biryomumaisho John, who was heading to work in a garden in Nyakahanga A Cell.
The body was found lying in a banana plantation owned by Muhangi Michael, under a coffee tree.
Biryomumaisho alerted Muhangi’s wife, who in turn informed Mugume Christopher. The matter was reported to the police, who promptly visited the scene and documented evidence.
According to Kigezi Region Police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate, Tumuramye’s body bore multiple injuries, indicating he had been assaulted.
