Rukungiri LC1 Chairman, Wife on the Run After Coffee Theft Murder

Police in Rukungiri District are searching for the LC1 Chairman of Ikondere Cell, Ibanda Parish in Nyarushanje Sub-county, Benson Turyahabwe, along with several others, in connection with the murder of a 28-year-old man accused of stealing coffee.

The suspects including Turyahabwe, his wife Christine Turyahabwe, an employee identified as Girigori, and others allegedly conspired to kill Robert Muhumuza, also known as Muja, a resident of Ruyonja Cell in Ruyonja Parish, Nyarushanje Sub-county. The incident occurred around midnight on Monday at Ikondere Cell.

According to police, on Sunday at around 10:00 PM, the deceased, who was reportedly intoxicated, went to the residence of Mwesigwa Hillary in Nyarushanje Trading Centre, where they spent the night. Around midnight, Turyahabwe, accompanied by his wife Christine, their employee Girigori, and other unidentified individuals, reportedly knocked on the door of Mwesigwa’s house.

When Mwesigwa opened the door, the group allegedly tied both men with ropes and began assaulting them, accusing them of stealing coffee from Turyahabwe’s property.

The assault drew the attention of Akampa Felix, Mwesigwa’s brother, who intervened and stopped the attack. The suspects then fled the scene, leaving the victims behind in pain.

At around 3:00 PM on Monday, Mwesigwa realized that Muhumuza had died. He informed his brother Akampa, who then reported the matter to police.

Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, confirmed that a murder case was registered at Rubabo Police Station. The scene was visited and documented, witness statements were recorded, Mwesigwa was medically examined, and a postmortem was conducted on the deceased.

Maate added that the suspects are currently on the run, but efforts to apprehend them are ongoing.
