Rukungiri Man Killed in Bar Dispute, Area Chairperson Arrested

RUKUNGIRI – Police in Rukungiri District are probing the death of John Tukamuhabwa, a 20-year-old resident of Omukazagiro cell, Katoonya parish, Nyakishenyi sub-county.

According to a police statement dated 29/09/2023, around 10:00 PM at Omukagaana trading center Kahama cell, Murama parish, an altercation erupted at a bar owned by Kamani, involving the deceased and his colleagues over a girl (waiter). The dispute escalated into a physical confrontation, prompting Tukamuhabwa to leave the premises.

While on his way home, Tukamuhabwa was reportedly pursued and apprehended by his colleagues, including Kamani and some of his staff. They allegedly assaulted him severely, and the assault continued with the involvement of Burungi Robert, the area chairperson of the trading center. Tukamuhabwa was eventually left stranded after being robbed of his belongings.

Reportedly rescued by his mother, Evelyn Kenganzi, who found him in critical condition on the way home, Tukamuhabwa was taken to Nyakishenyi Community Health Center and later referred to Kabale Referral Hospital. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries on 02/10/2023.

Elly Maate, Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, stated that a report was filed by Tukamuhabwa’s mother at Nyakishenyi Police station and later at Rukungiri Police station.

The crime scene was visited, processed, and postmortem conducted. One suspect, Robert Birungi, the area chairperson, has been arrested for further investigation, while others involved are currently evading capture.
