Police in Rukiga District are investigating a case of aggravated robbery and murder after a truck driver was brutally killed and part of his cargo stolen in Bukinda Sub county.
According to police, the incident occurred at about 2:00 a.m. on Friday night at Bufureka Trading Centre, Kitaburaza Village, Bukinda Sub County in Rukiga District. The victim, identified as Katabazi Bernard, 48, a driver from Rubirizi District, was transporting 35 tonnes of rice from Rwanda to the Mpondwe border with the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Preliminary reports indicate that unknown assailants intercepted Katabazi’s Actros Benz truck, registration number RAE 415A/RL2943, which belonged to SOCO PRODI Ltd of Rwanda. The attackers allegedly broke into the vehicle, stole about 50 sacks of rice, and later dragged Katabazi from the truck.
He was cut multiple times, his head smashed, and his body dumped in the middle of the road at Kyobugombe Cell, Kaharo Subcounty in Kabale District.
Fellow drivers, who were also ferrying rice along the same route, later identified the body.
A team of investigators from Kabale visited both crime scenes, documented evidence, and conveyed the body to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination. Statements from witnesses have been recorded, and a manhunt for the suspects is ongoing.
Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate confirmed the incident, describing it as a case of aggravated robbery and murder. He assured the public that investigations are underway to apprehend those responsible.
