RUKUNGIRI: Two fishermen from the Rukungiri District have been found dead along the shores of Lake Edward, in the Kagezi area of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The deceased are identified as Sunday Moses, 22, a resident of Rumira cell, Bugangari parish, Bugangari sub-county, and Namanya Innocent, 26, a resident of Kyehunde village, Bwambara parish, Bwambara sub-county. Both were fishermen at the Rwenshama landing site.
According to a police statement, the two fishermen, along with three others identified as Atwibu Mwesigwa, Mukasa Rajabu Midedo, and Byaruhanga Apollo who work for Mugenyi Aisha, set off for Lake Edward on July 8, 2024, at 2:00 PM to conduct fishing activities. They spent three days fishing.

On July 11, 2024, at around 10:30 AM, as they were preparing their hooks in the Kagezi area of DR Congo, Atwibu Mwesigwa spotted Congolese soldiers approaching. He raised an alarm, prompting the group to flee in different directions while the soldiers began firing. When the fishermen regrouped at their rendezvous point, they discovered that Namanya Innocent and Sunday Moses were missing.
The remaining three fishermen, Mukasa Rajabu Midedo, Byaruhanga Apollo, and Atwibu Mwesigwa, returned to the Rwenshama landing site and informed their employer, Aisha Namugenyi, and other residents about the incident.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi region police spokesperson, reported that the bodies of the deceased were found on Monday along the shores of Lake Edward in the Kagezi area of DR Congo.
Maate stated that they suspect foul play, and the case of the disappearance, initially registered at the Rwenshama police station, is now being investigated as a murder.
