Several localities in the Ikobo group, Walikale territory (North Kivu) Democratic Republic of Congo, have been without drinking water for about a month, civil society reported on Wednesday, September 10. The shortage follows repeated breakdowns in the local water supply network.
During the peak of clashes between M23 rebels and local self-defense groups, the water catchment point on Mount Mulema suffered significant damage. Since then, the local organization COGEP has attempted repairs, but so far without success.
“The most urgent need is drinking water. Around 14,000 residents are affected, including those in Buleusa, Katrisa, Kilambo, Bukumbirwa, Rusamambu, and Bushimba. Water is a major challenge here, and the population is seriously deprived,” said Grace Burutere, a community leader and member of civil society in Buleusa.
Civil society groups in Buleusa are raising the alarm and calling for immediate intervention from authorities and development partners.
Burutere emphasized the need for support to strengthen local initiatives. She urged authorities and partners to equip COGEP with a fusion machine, which would enable timely repairs whenever breakdowns occur.
