At least 33 pupils in Kabale District missed the recently concluded Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) despite being registered to sit for them, according to the District Education Officer, Moses Tumwijukye Bwengye.
Out of 3,467 pupils registered to sit for the 2025 PLE, only 3,432 candidates turned up for the examinations, which were conducted on Monday and Tuesday this week.
The District Education Officer attributed the absenteeism to several factors, including school dropouts, child labour, and early marriages among pupils. In some cases, school authorities were unable to trace the whereabouts of the registered candidates after registration.
The Kabale District Education Department, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Sports, has launched investigations to establish the causes of absenteeism and develop sustainable interventions to ensure that all registered pupils sit for their final examinations in the future.
Tumwijukye emphasized that the reasons behind pupils missing the exams vary from one case to another, adding that the district is committed to working with parents, community leaders, and school administrators to curb the problem and improve pupil retention and completion rates.
