The Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU) National Chairperson, Zadock Tumuhimbise, has revealed that it is now three years and two and a half months since government failed to commit to increasing salaries for Arts teachers, despite repeated reminders to President Museveni and several government ministries.
Speaking to Journalists at White Horse Inn Hotel in Kabale District on Monday, Tumuhimbise explained that after realizing the government was not willing to act, the union convened a special National Executive Council meeting and resolved to lay down tools starting Monday, 15th September 2025.
He said the decision intends to send a strong signal to government about the frustration of teachers who were left out of the 2022 salary enhancement.
The strike comes at a critical time as students prepare to enter third term, a promotional term that determines academic progression. Tumuhimbise admitted the industrial action would negatively impact learners, particularly in Arts subjects.
Tumuhimbise said the union has professional standards and mechanisms that who hold members that defy the directive accountable.
