KANUNGU: The State Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Godfrey Kabbyanga Baluku, has encouraged the youth in Kanungu District to embrace sports as part of their co-curricular activities to facilitate effective talent identification.
Minister Kabbyanga made these remarks during the Baryomunsi Cup tournament, where Bujerengye Football Club emerged victorious, clinching the trophy after defeating Nyakibuga Football Club 3-0 in a thrilling penalty shootout.
The match, held on Friday at Kihanda Playground in Rugando Cell, Kihanda Parish, Kihanda Subcounty, attracted much excitement from the local community.
As the guest of honor, Minister Kabbyanga emphasized the role of sports in fostering economic development and nurturing talent within communities.
He highlighted that tournaments like the Baryomunsi Cup provide an excellent platform to mobilize the youth, promote mindset change, and prepare them for vocational skills training as a way to combat poverty and idleness.
He applauded Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, the organizer of the event and the Kinkizi East Member of Parliament, for his efforts in promoting sports in the region.
Minister Kabbyanga also rewarded each of the four participating teams with Shs100,000 for their efforts and participation.
Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, who is also the Minister of ICT and National Guidance, commended all the teams for displaying discipline and sportsmanship throughout the tournament.
He encouraged the youth to engage in sports after work rather than indulging in harmful behaviors such as excessive alcohol consumption and theft.
He further noted that sports not only help in preventing non-communicable diseases but also create career opportunities, as some individuals secure jobs through their athletic achievements.
Davis Kyarugahe, the Kihanda LC3 Chairperson, also praised Minister Baryomunsi for organizing the tournament, emphasizing the positive impact of sports in steering the youth away from negative influences.
The teams that participated in the Baryomunsi Cup tournament included Nyakibuga, Bujerengye, Nyakatoma, and Rwenkyende.
The winning team, Bujerengye, took home a trophy and a cash prize of Shs600,000. The runners-up, Nyakibuga, received Shs400,000, while the other two teams were each rewarded with Shs300,000 for their participation.
