The Bishop of Kabale Diocese, Rt. Rev. Callist Rubaramira, has called on school head teachers across Uganda to make productive use of school land by establishing income-generating and educational projects.

Presiding over a confirmation ceremony for 322 confirmants at Holy Family Buhara Catholic Parish in Buhara Sub-county, Kabale District on Tuesday, Bishop Rubaramira expressed concern that many schools, especially public ones, have vast tracts of land lying idle.

He urged school leaders to collaborate with stakeholders to initiate projects such as piggery, poultry, and school gardens for vegetables and cash crops. According to the bishop, such initiatives would offer learners hands-on skills in agriculture and entrepreneurship while promoting sustainability, environmental awareness, and healthy eating habits.

Bishop Rubaramira added that productive use of school land can help schools provide affordable or free lunches for learners, reduce operational costs, and promote nutrition education.

Meanwhile, Kabale District Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Catherine Atwakiire Ndamira, decried the high levels of poverty in the Kigezi Sub-region.

She attributed the challenge to low household incomes, which she said limit access to quality education and fuel domestic violence.
