KAMPALA: The National Unity Platform (NUP) President, Robert Ssentamu Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has accused President Yoweri Museveni of “shamelessly parading” individuals falsely presented as NUP members defecting to the National Resistance Movement (NRM).
In a statement on his X handle on Wednesday, Bobi Wine alleged that these individuals were made to wear brand-new T-shirts stolen from NUP party headquarters, with some even holding stolen membership cards.
“Museveni’s shamelessness knows no measure. A few days ago, they raided our offices and School of Leadership, stealing many materials, including over 1,000 T-shirts and 2,500 membership cards,” he stated.
He further accused the NRM of transporting people from various districts to attend its rallies in order to avoid the embarrassment of empty grounds.
“We must do everything within our means to free our country from this mess!” he urged.
Bobi Wine’s remarks come in response to reports that during a rally held on Tuesday at Mbogo Muslim Primary School for Ms. Faridah Nambi, the NRM flag bearer for the Kawempe North parliamentary seat, 186 individuals allegedly defected from NUP to NRM.
The Kawempe North seat fell vacant following the death of MP Muhammad Ssegirinya in January 2025. The by-election is scheduled for Thursday, March 13, 2025.
