KISORO: The Bufumbira North Member of Parliament, Hon. Kamara John Nizeyimana, has won his lawsuit against Mupaka Town Council over the Kamara market disputes.
Hon. Kamara sued Mupaka Town Council last month, seeking court declarations against what he described as unfair treatment by the town council administration and its agencies. He based his suit on various grievances, including the town council’s demand for a market operating license fee of 45 million shillings without proper assessment, restrictions on certain commodities being sold at his privately owned market, roadblocks for livestock and local brew sellers, and the collection of market dues and taxes from Kamara market vendors.
In his ruling on Friday, His Worship Komakech Kenneth, the Kisoro Chief Magistrate cited the Market Act 2023, stating that individuals are permitted to operate their own markets by applying for authorization from relevant administrative units. Komakech noted that Hon. Kamara had followed all necessary procedures and had been granted permission to operate his market by Mupaka Town Council, led by the town clerk, Ahishakiye Johnson.
However, the magistrate did not award the 500 million shillings in damages that Kamara had claimed. In an interview with our reporter, His Worship Komakech stated that he would publish copies of the ruling on Monday (Tomorrow).
