The Bufumbira North Member of Parliament, Kamara John Nizeyimana has hailed the people of Kisoro District for choosing peace and dignity at the ballot, even as controversy surrounds the outcome of the recent parliamentary election.
Kamara who had contested as an independent candidate lost the seat to the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Flag Bearer Fortunate Habyara during the 15th January 2026 general elections. Kamara garnered 8,289 votes, Habyara garnered 8,374 votes while the DP Candidate, Dan Ngirabakunzi secured 63 votes.
Addressing the media at Kumudege Business Centre on Wednesday, Kamara said voters turned out early, voted calmly and returned to their homes believing their voices had been heard.
He noted that celebrations by his supporters had already begun when concerns later emerged over the declaration of results, leaving many residents confused and deeply unsettled.
Kamara described a tense atmosphere in parts of the constituency, where some voters have withdrawn into their homes, expressing disappointment and a sense of loss over results they feel do not reflect their choice.
He said the situation has taken an emotional toll on communities that had placed great hope in the electoral process as a means of shaping their future.
According to Kamara, complaints raised by voters have been forwarded to higher authorities, who are now reviewing the conduct of the election.
He said possible options being considered include a re-run in areas affected by alleged irregularities or a fresh by-election across the constituency, steps he believes could help restore trust.
Despite the uncertainty, Kamara appealed for calm and unity, urging residents to remain peaceful and engaged in democratic activities.
He encouraged voters to turn up for the upcoming councilor elections and to remain vigilant in safeguarding their votes, stressing that peaceful participation remains the strongest voice of the people.
