The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Chairperson for Rukiga District, Michael Kwarikunda, has ditched the party and declared his intention to contest for the District Chairperson seat as an independent candidate.
Kwarikunda, who has served as FDC chairperson for four years, made the announcement on Tuesday morning while addressing journalists at Tuuza Residence Lounge in Kabale Municipality.
He explained that his decision to leave FDC was driven by internal conflicts that he says have crippled the party’s effectiveness. Kwarikunda previously contested for the same seat in the 2021 elections on the FDC ticket but lost to Robert Kakwerere Mbabazi in a tightly contested race.
He said his renewed bid is aimed at offering outright leadership, accountability, and transparency, to the people of Rukiga.
Citing the example of the National Kids Athletics Tournament hosted in Soroti District during the 2023/2024 financial year, Kwarikunda accused the current district leadership of failing to fund Rukiga’s representatives. As a result, students missed the opportunity to showcase their talents.
He also alleged that the district leadership failed to account for funds allocated to the event.
Kwarikunda vowed to restore the district’s image and improve essential services such as healthcare, education, road infrastructure, and other social services.
