According to the Aswa East Region Police PRO, Inspector of Police (IP) Joe Oloya, the suspects were being held on various charges, including domestic violence and theft. IP Oloya stated that the escape occurred while Police Constable (PC) Aciro Florence, who was the only officer on duty that night and was also responsible for guarding the cells, had briefly left her post to check on her sleeping daughter.
When PC Aciro returned at approximately 2:00 a.m., she discovered that the padlock on the male cells had been destroyed and removed. The cell door was wide open, and the suspects were nowhere to be found. She immediately alerted her fellow officers, who were asleep at their residences near the station.
