Government has commenced the process of compensating landowners affected by the planned establishment of an iron ore factory in Rubanda District, the Minister of Finance in Charge of General Duties, Henry Musasizi, has announced.
While campaigning in Rubanda District in November last year, President Yoweri Museveni directed leaders in the district to urgently secure 150 acres of land to facilitate the construction of an industrial hub expected to create employment opportunities for Ugandans. The President emphasized that the proposed industrial hub for the Kigezi Sub-region would play a key role in the country’s industrialisation and job creation agenda.
Later, while presiding over the 45th anniversary celebrations of Tarehe Sita at the former Kabale National Teachers’ College grounds in Kabale District in February this year, President Museveni assured residents that all affected landowners would be compensated in accordance with the law. He also urged residents to comply with Section 9 of the Mining and Minerals Act, 2022, which vests ownership of all minerals in the Government of Uganda.
Now, while speaking as the guest of honour during the swearing-in ceremony of the Kabale Municipal Mayor and councillors, Minister Musasizi who doubles as the Rubanda East County Member of Parliament revealed that one of the key assignments President Museveni entrusted him with, is ensuring that landowners in Murukoro Village, Nyarurambi Ward, Rubanda Town Council are duly compensated.
Minister Musasizi said the Chief Government Valuer is currently assessing the land to determine compensation values, after which the affected landowners will be compensated to pave way for the construction of the iron ore factory.
He noted that once completed, the factory is expected to create employment opportunities for many residents across the Kigezi Sub-region.
