KATAKWI: Green Land Integrated Farm in Ogoria Village, Toroma County, Katakwi District, has unveiled plans to produce 20 million tree seedlings over the next five years following the establishment of a greenhouse.
The farm’s director, Simon Opeded, announced that the seedlings will be distributed across Katakwi’s 20 sub-counties as part of a wealth-creation initiative.
The greenhouse farming project aims to boost productivity by controlling environmental conditions, a method increasingly adopted in agriculture to address unpredictable weather patterns.
Opeded, a renowned farmer and multiple national farming award winner, revealed that the project has already produced 40,000 tree seedlings, which will be officially launched this month by Vice President Maj. Rtd. Jessica Rose Alupo Epel.
He emphasized that greenhouse farming has enabled farmers to thrive even in challenging climatic conditions.
To support the initiative, Opeded has trained 20 young men and women to work in the greenhouse, focusing on seedling production.
“Wealth lies in the hands of committed and persistent farmers,” he said, noting that developing a mixed farm has helped him overcome poverty. In addition to tree seedlings, Opeded is involved in citrus farming, beekeeping, poultry, and cattle farming.
Vice President Alupo, who played a pivotal role in establishing the farm’s greenhouse, has encouraged the Ateker community to embrace commercial agriculture to improve livelihoods.
She has also pledged to support model farmers in Katakwi’s 20 sub-counties by purchasing seedlings for distribution.
“This initiative marks a significant step towards empowering farmers and enhancing agricultural productivity in the region,” said Alupo.
