Police in Rukungiri District have launched a manhunt for unknown suspects who allegedly stole a police firearm, an SMG rifle loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition.
The incident occurred on Saturday at around 8:30 PM at Rwakaraba Police Post in Nyakishenyi Sub-county, according to the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, Elly Maate.
Maate explained that at approximately 6:00 PM, Police Constable No. 83982, Muyambi Pius, reported for duty and left his assigned firearm in his bedroom adjacent to the police post counter. At around 8:00 PM, he reportedly left for supper at a nearby hotel about 60 meters away, leaving the firearm secured inside the room.
Upon returning, PC Muyambi discovered that his room had been broken into and the rifle was missing. He immediately raised the alarm, and members of the neighborhood responded to confirm the incident. He also notified his Officer-in-Charge (OC), who had earlier left for medical treatment.
The scene was later visited by the Rukungiri OC Station along with the K-9 unit, but no immediate leads or suspects were identified. PC Muyambi was subsequently arrested for questioning as investigations continue.
Maate urged the public to remain vigilant and security-conscious. He called on residents to report any suspicious individuals or objects to local leaders or the nearest police station, to aid in the swift recovery of the firearm and arrest of the culprits.
