KABALE – The Minister of State for Trade, Industry, and Cooperative (Industry), David Bahati has once again emphasized his opposition to homosexuality, stating that his personal focus is on obtaining a “visa to heaven” rather than America.
Having introduced the Anti-Homosexuality Bill to parliament in 2009, Minister Bahati reiterated his belief that homosexuality contradicts African culture.
Addressing the congregation at the celebration of Hossana Deborah’s union with Happiness and Annah Kyokwijuka, a resident of Ruhiita Kijuguta Northern Division, held at White Horse Inn in Kabale municipality, Minister Bahati underscored the strong stance of the Ugandan government and society against homosexuality.
Expressing confidence in Uganda’s ability to handle the issue without external intervention, Minister Bahati portrayed the Anti-Homosexuality Bill as a testament to the country’s commitment to safeguarding African cultural values and preventing any perceived threat to trade.
The Minister’s remarks have reignited the debate on LGBTQ+ rights in Uganda, a nation where homosexuality is criminalized, justified on the grounds of being contrary to African culture and deemed unproductive.
Minister Bahati’s statement has generated both support and criticism locally and internationally, highlighting the ongoing discourse on LGBTQ+ rights and cultural values.
He clarified that his primary concern is securing a “VISA to heaven,” distancing himself from any association with American values.
