The Kabale Chief Magistrates Court has charged and remanded prominent businessman Sophan Mutahunga, alias Muta, alongside Emmanuel Byamakama and Lauben Byamugisha, to Ndorwa Government Prison over the alleged murder of a 36-year-old man.
Presiding Chief Magistrate Derrick Byamugisha heard from prosecution, led by Senior Resident State Attorney Julie Nanjjuju, that on Friday last week at around 6:00 a.m., in Kigongi A Cell, Central Division, Kabale Municipality, the accused and others still at large caused the death of Bedarn Niwamanya, in violation of sections 188 and 189 of the Penal Code Act.
Niwamanya, a vendor of black tea and miraa (khat) opposite Manhattan Hotel in Kigongi, was reportedly seized by Mutahunga, his accomplices, and unidentified suspects still on the run. The group allegedly dragged him to an area opposite TikTok Bar, where they were joined by more assailants and proceeded to lynch him.
Prosecution further alleged that the attackers later placed Niwamanya’s body in a white Toyota Harrier, registration number UBC 505D, believed to be owned by Mutahunga, and dumped it in Makanga Cell.
His Worship said he had no jurisdiction to determine the nature of the case. He said it can only be heard in the High Court and remanded the trio until September 8, 2025, as investigations continue
