Monica Muraza, Legal Officer with the Uganda Law Society Legal Aid Project, has criticized parents who deliberately exclude children born out of wedlock when drafting their wills.
Speaking on Wednesday to members of the Fathers’ Fellowship at Rukore Church of Uganda Archdeaconry in Ryakarimira Town Council, Kabale District, Muraza emphasized the critical importance of writing wills before death. She urged fathers to embrace proper estate planning to prevent future family disputes.
The outreach event was part of a broader initiative aimed at strengthening crime prevention, promoting justice, combating organized crime, addressing drug-related issues, reinforcing the rule of law, and building community resilience.
Muraza underscored that writing a will is essential in minimizing property-related conflicts within families. She stressed that all children, regardless of the circumstances of their birth, have equal inheritance rights under the law. If such children are excluded from a will, she said, they are legally entitled to challenge it in court.

Meanwhile, Baraba Atuheire, a paralegal officer with the Uganda Law Society Legal Aid Project, advised Local Council One chairpersons to invest in tape measures to ensure accurate land measurements during transactions. This, he explained, would help reduce boundary-related disputes.
Atuheire also encouraged families to apply jointly for letters of administration following the death of a family head. Doing so, he said, helps avoid duplication and potential disagreements over the deceased’s estate.
