The Kabale Chief Magistrates Court has sentenced a 22-year-old man to 23 months in prison for escaping from lawful custody.
Prosecution, led by Kabale Resident Senior State Attorney Julie Nanjjunju, told court presided over by Chief Magistrate His Worship Derrick Byamugisha that Daudi Tumushabe escaped from Kabale Central Police Station on 10th October 2025.
Tumushabe had been arrested by Smith Mutebemberwa, who found him moving at night armed with a panga. A case was registered under SD 4/10/10/2025. However, while being escorted to the police cells by Police Constable William Katushabe, Tumushabe broke free, climbed over the station gate and fled. Constable Katushabe chased and rearrested him shortly after.
When charges were read out, Tumushabe pleaded guilty and begged court for mercy.
The Resident State Attorney, Nanjjunju, asked court to sentence him to two years, arguing that his actions showed he was not of upright character, adding that an innocent person would not attempt to flee from lawful custody.
In his defence, Tumushabe expressed remorse and pleaded for leniency.
While delivering the sentence, His Worship Byamugisha noted that cases involving panga-wielding goons terrorising innocent people were rampant in the court’s jurisdiction. He further acknowledged that the convict had not wasted court’s time by pleading guilty.
He therefore sentenced Tumushabe to 23 months in prison.
