A first-year student pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture and Land Use Management at Kabale University has died by suicide under unclear circumstances.
The deceased has been identified as Victor Mugarura, 22, a resident of Hamurara Cell, Nyamiyaga Ward, Bubaare Town Council in Rubanda District. According to a police statement, Mugarura allegedly hanged himself using a rope.
Prior to the incident, Mugarura reportedly left behind a note that read:
“I am sorry for this disappointment, but I hope you will forgive me. I didn’t expect this but this is what life is. Dear God, forgive me all my sins. Life is a scum.”
According to police, the incident occurred on Thursday at an unknown time. Mugarura allegedly took his mother’s phone and went missing. His family began searching for him until evening, when his sister tried to call the phone and heard it ringing inside the house where he slept. Upon opening the door, she discovered his body hanging above the bed.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, confirmed that police were notified and promptly visited the scene. They examined and documented it, recorded statements from relevant witnesses, and recovered the rope used in the act as evidence.
Maate urged members of the public, especially the youth, to seek help from local leaders and relevant offices when faced with personal challenges, rather than resorting to suicide.
“Taking one’s life doesn’t solve anything,” he emphasized.
