The Woman Member of Parliament for Kabale District, Hon. Catherine Atwakiire Ndamira, has called on electorates to prioritize peace and unity ahead of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) primary elections.
The primaries, initially scheduled for July 16, have been rescheduled to July 17.
Hon. Atwakiire made the remarks on Tuesday while addressing mourners at the funeral service of the late Kakare David at St. Matthew Bugarama Church of Uganda in Kaharo Sub-county, Ndorwa East Constituency, Kabale District.
She emphasized the importance of calm, mutual respect, and peaceful participation throughout the electoral process.
“Peaceful elections are essential for building a stable and prosperous society,” she said, urging NRM supporters to stay united and focused.
Her remarks came shortly after reports surfaced on Tuesday that angry residents of Nyombe Parish in Kahungye Sub-county had dismantled the Habuhinga–Kasiru bridge.
The action was allegedly aimed at blocking Ndorwa West MP and Minister of State for Trade, Industry, and Cooperatives (Industry), David Kwesiga Bahati, from reaching Butanda Sub-county for consultative meetings.
The funeral service was led by Rev. Canon Milton Nkurunungi, Diocesan Secretary of the Diocese of Kigezi.
The late Kakare David, 89, was a resident of Kibungo Village in Kitohwa Parish, Kaharo Sub-county.
He was the brother of George William Kanagizi, the Senior Presidential Advisor on Kigezi Affairs.
He is survived by his wife, six children, 30 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
