KABALE: The Woman Member of Parliament for Kabale District, Honorable Catherine Atwakiire Ndamira, has expressed concern over the rising cases of child labor in the district, urging for collective action from both leaders and the public to protect children’s rights.
Speaking during a mass at Our Lady of Good Shepherd Rushoroza Cathedral in Kabale Municipality, where 756 Confirmants were confirmed into the Catholic faith on Sunday, Hon. Atwakiire highlighted the need to address child labor. The mass was led by the Bishop of Kabale Diocese, Rt. Rev. Callist Rubaramira.
According to Honorable Atwakiire many children, particularly in Kabale town, are being forced into child labor, engaging in activities such as selling eggs, pancakes, and mandazi. She condemned these practices, noting that they infringe on children’s rights and divert them from their education, as they are enticed by the small earnings they make.
“Engaging children in labor not only violates their rights but also hinders their academic progress,” she said.
