KANUNGU: Police in Kanungu District have received a sniffer dog from Police Headquarters in Kampala to help curtail rampant crimes in the area.

The K-9 dog, named Prince (a German Shepherd), was handed over on Saturday around 2:00 PM at Kanungu Central Police Station by AIP Kyesiimo Gabriel and its handler PC Otim from Police Headquarters in Kampala.

Godfrey Karabenda, the Mayor of Kanungu Town Council and the NRM Chairman for Kanungu District, said the acquisition of the K-9 unit will serve as a deterrent for coffee thieves and other criminals. He emphasized that the presence of the dog would discourage theft, which has been rampant due to the absence of such preventive measures. Karabenda urged Local Council One Chairpersons and other leaders to educate the community on utilizing the services of the canine unit.

However, Kanungu District Police Commander SP Kutosi Titus highlighted a lack of transportation and fuel allocation for the canine unit, which hinders its mobility across the district. He also stressed the need for community awareness about the dog services.

Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, noted that the introduction of the K-9 unit addresses the long-standing absence of dog services needed to combat frequent crimes, including the theft of coffee and domestic animals. Maate stated that the sniffer dog would aid in conducting successful investigations in the area. He also warned residents to avoid crime scenes to prevent disrupting the dog’s detection work.
