KANUNGU: Kanungu District LC5 Chairman, Eng. Arineitwe Sam Kajojo, has officially launched bid to contest for the Kinkiizi East Member of Parliament seat in the upcoming 2026 general elections.
The Kinkiizi East constituency has been represented by Dr. Chris Baryomunsi for the past 20 years. While launching his campaign on Friday at the Farmers’ Lounge in Kanungu District, Eng. Kajojo criticized Dr. Baryomunsi’s leadership, claiming it has left the constituency lagging behind in service delivery.
Eng. Kajojo highlighted key challenges facing the constituency, including inadequate access to clean water, poor road networks, lack of quality schools, and insufficient agricultural infrastructure.
“We need to work together, reduce sectarian politics, and focus on service delivery,” said Eng. Kajojo. “The thirst we have as a district—for water, roads, good schools, and agricultural productivity—should unite us. These issues require collective effort and appreciation of their importance.”
Reflecting on his tenure as LC5 Chairman, Kajojo emphasized the need for accountability in leadership.
“If I have served as District LC5 Chairman for five years, I must explain to my people what impact I have made and what value I have contributed to Kanungu. Similarly, Dr. Baryomunsi, who has been in Parliament for 20 years and is also the Minister of ICT and National Guidance, should account for his work. He should explain the level of development he has brought to Kanungu, how many lives he has transformed, and how he has contributed to economic progress in the constituency,” Eng. Kajojo said.

Local council leaders, including Twesigye Kurinerio and Kiiza Julius, expressed their dissatisfaction with Dr. Baryomunsi’s performance over the years. They pledged to mobilize support to ensure his removal in the next elections.
“It’s unacceptable to have a Member of Parliament serving for more than two terms. This creates complacency and stalls development. Dr. Baryomunsi should be grateful for the 20 years he has served and give others an opportunity to lead,” They said.
Kiiza echoed these sentiments, stating that the constituency needs fresh ideas and leadership to address its pressing issues.

In a related development, Workers’ MP Arinaitwe Rwakajara has announced his intention to contest for the position of NRM Vice Chairperson for the Western Region, a role currently held by Dr. Chris Baryomunsi.
Speaking to journalists at the White Horse Inn in Kabale Municipality, Rwakajara quoted Psalm 11:3: “If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” He explained his decision, saying, “I’m not claiming that the NRM is failing entirely, but there are areas where the party’s foundation is being eroded. It’s time for righteous leaders to step in and rebuild.”
Rwakajara expressed confidence in his ability to secure the position, citing strong networks and support across all regions of the NRM.
“I have mobilized extensively and built strong connections nationwide. I’m ready to represent the Western Region in the NRM’s Central Executive Committee,” he said.
Rwakajara also noted that the government faces significant challenges, including corruption, land disputes, and unfulfilled pledges, which must be addressed in the lead-up to the 2026 elections.
