Lwemiyaga County MP Theodore Ssekikubo, who is leading the move, says that despite numerous extensions, solicitations, blackmail, and drama surrounding the signing of the censure motion, his team is struggling to gather the 176 signatures needed, three weeks after the exercise began. The motion aims to relieve four Commissioners of their duties over the Shs1.7Bn Service Award.
Ssekikubo struck an optimistic tone, assuring the media that although he had hoped to file his notice with the Clerk to Parliament on 17th June 2024, plans must be delayed until 12 more MPs sign the motion. He revealed that by Friday, the signature count had reached more than 160.
With the motion seen as a direct move to combat corruption in Parliament, questions continue to arise about the slow signing rate. To be debated, the motion must have at least 167 signatures. Out of the six legislators from Kisoro district, only Hon. Paul Kwizera Bucyana has signed the motion. It remains unclear whether the remaining MPs will sign with only two days left.
In an interview with our reporter, Kisoro district LCV Chairperson Abel Bizimana supported Kisoro MPs who have not signed, arguing that the motion protects some corrupt individuals while targeting others. He decried the increasing corruption among members of parliament and called for a constitutional intervention, stating that parliament has failed to regulate itself.
