KITGUM: The Local Organizing Committee for the 48th commemoration of St. Janani Luwum Day, scheduled to take place at Wii-Gweng in Mucwini Sub-County, Kitgum District, is seeking Ushs98 million to fund the event.
St. Janani Luwum Day, celebrated annually on February 16th, honors the life and service of Janani Luwum, the former Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Uganda, who was tragically murdered on the orders of then-President Idi Amin.
Canon Gladys Oyat, Chairperson of the Local Organizing Committee, shared during a press briefing on Tuesday that preparations for the commemoration are currently at 60% completion, with 100 intercessors expected to attend.
She mentioned that foot pilgrims will begin their journey on February 11th from Gulu City, stopping in Cwero for the night. They will continue on February 12th to Angagura, then proceed to Lacekocot on February 13th. The pilgrims are expected to reach Kitgum on February 15th, before heading to Wii-Gweng in Mucwini.
In an effort to make this year’s celebration stand out, Oyat announced that a football tournament has been organized, with the final match set to take place on February 15th, 2025. The winning team will be awarded a trophy.
Oyat appealed to Christians and well-wishers to offer financial or material support to ensure the success of the event.

Rt. Rev. Wilson Kitara, Bishop of Kitgum Diocese, stated that the 48th commemoration will be led by the Diocese of Kitgum and northern Uganda, with 20 bishops expected to attend.
