KITGUM: Farmers in Kitgum District and surrounding areas have been encouraged to use the ongoing dry season as a time to prepare for the first planting season, expected to begin in late March or early April.
The appeal was made by Denis Ocira, the Kitgum District Agriculture Officer, during an interview with thesouce.co.ug on Friday morning.
Ocira emphasized that many farmers often remain idle during the dry season, neglecting critical preparation activities.
He urged them to use this time effectively to open up land, select crops or enterprises to focus on, and gather necessary inputs. This, he said, would help ensure they are ready when the rains arrive.
He also highlighted the availability of tractors in the district, which are more affordable compared to those hired from private individuals or companies.
He encouraged farmers to take advantage of these tractors to increase their productivity.
Additionally, Ocira urged farmers to apply for the Micro-Scale Irrigation Project, which has been extended by four months.
This project provides irrigation equipment to enable farmers to practice climate-smart agriculture, reducing their dependence on rainfall for planting crops.
According to Ocira, adopting irrigation will significantly enhance productivity, improve livelihoods, and transform the lives of farmers in the region.
