The Acting Principal Judge, Lady Justice Okuo Jane Kajuga, has officially launched the Kumi High Court Circuit marking a significant milestone in the Judiciary’s mission to bring justice services closer to the people.
The ceremony began with Lady Justice Okuo inspecting a Guard of Honour mounted by the Uganda Police Force. This was followed by a meeting with Judicial Officers serving within the new Circuit.
To commemorate the occasion, a ceremonial tree was planted within the court compound. Justice Okuo later participated in a guided tour of the court premises.
In her remarks, Lady Justice Okuo emphasized that the establishment of the Kumi High Court will alleviate the administrative burden previously borne by Soroti High Court, which had been responsible for handling cases from multiple jurisdictions.
She also highlighted staffing challenges within the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), noting that these could hinder the timely disposal of cases.
The Resident Judge of Kumi High Court, Lady Justice Mary Ikit, reported that the court currently has 284 case files primarily criminal in nature that were recently transferred from Soroti High Court.
During the tour, Justice Okuo commended the court for its cleanliness and organization, particularly praising the well-maintained exhibition and archive stores.
The event was held under the theme “Enhancing Judicial Accountability and Access to Justice,” underscoring the Judiciary’s commitment to efficiency, transparency, and improved service delivery.
District leaders also applauded the Judiciary for operationalizing the High Court Circuit in Kumi, recognizing its potential to enhance access to justice for the local population.
