The Assistant Spiritual Director of Yesu Ahuriire Community in the Archdiocese of Mbarara, Rev. Fr. Cyril Mujuni, has condemned the increasing cases of divorce among married couples, warning that the trend is eroding trust and weakening families.

Fr. Mujuni made the remarks on Wednesday during a sendoff Mass for the late Lenah Kyomuhangi, who succumbed to cancer on Monday at her home in Rwensiinga Village, Katooma Parish, Rwahi Town Council, Rushenyi County, Ntungamo District.

Mourners were left in shock after it was revealed that Kyomuhangi had separated with her husband after he refused to provide money for her cancer treatment.

The late Kyomuhangi, who was married in Kisoro, reportedly battled the disease for over a year at Mulago Hospital as an outpatient without support from her husband. She leaves behind four children.

Adding to the grief, Kyomuhangi’s husband did not attend her burial, a decision that deeply saddened mourners.

In his homily, Fr. Mujuni urged couples to invest in proper preparation before marriage and to nurture their relationships with continuous effort, trust, and love.

He encouraged open communication, constructive conflict resolution, and responsible financial management to strengthen family life.

The priest also condemned the culture of demanding exorbitant bride prices, saying it discourages young people from formalizing marriages.

Turning to politics, Fr. Mujuni criticized the commercialization of Uganda’s political landscape, saying it has fueled corruption and undermined democracy.

He noted that many politicians spend heavily on campaigns and later seek to recover their investments through corrupt means, leading to poor service delivery.

He called for reforms in campaign financing and stricter regulation of political donations to promote the election of leaders with integrity and better ideas.

“As a nation, we must look beyond money and choose leaders who will serve the people rather than themselves,” Fr. Mujuni emphasized.

Meanwhile, Rwahi Town Council LC3 NRM flag bearer, Asiimwe Nicholas Mwamba, praised the family for caring for Kyomuhangi during her illness and called for unity among families during both good and difficult times.

Abiasi Ainembabazi Sebutimbi, the councilor for Kayonza Sub-County, also urged mourners to embrace love, unity, and vigilance amid rising cases of insecurity in the area.
