Police in Rukungiri District have launched a manhunt for suspects who allegedly lynched and set ablaze a 27-year-old man accused of stealing a goat in Nyakishenyi Sub-county.
The deceased, identified as Allan Mwesigye, a resident of Kacence Cell in Kacence Parish, was reportedly caught red-handed in the early hours of Thursday, November 6, 2025, attempting to steal a goat belonging to Edith Barangirana, a resident of the same area.
According to police reports, after Mwesigye was apprehended, a group of locals descended on him, beating him to death before setting his body on fire. The owner of the goat later reported the incident to Nyakishenyi Police Station, prompting an immediate response from authorities.
Police spokesperson for the Kigezi Region, ASP Elly Maate, confirmed the incident, noting that officers visited and documented the scene, recorded witness statements, and conveyed the body to Rwakabengo Health Centre III for post-mortem examination.
“Efforts are underway to have all the suspects arrested and charged accordingly,” Maate said, condemning acts of mob justice and urging the public to always report suspects to lawful authorities.
He added that investigations into the incident are ongoing.
