KATAKWI: Hon. Cecilia Anyakoit, a member of the National Council of Sports, has announced her candidacy for the position of Woman MP for Katakwi District.
She confirmed that her political career will not involve a confrontation with Vice President Rtd. Maj. Jessica Rose Alupo Epel.
Anyakoit dismissed rumors suggesting she was entering the race to challenge the Vice President, calling them baseless and a misleading tactic employed by those opposed to the upcoming electoral elections.
In her statement, Anyakoit acknowledged the esteemed position of the Vice President in Katakwi, Teso, and the country at large. She emphasized that her intention is to contest for the Woman Member of Parliament seat rather than to engage in a rivalry with her fellow politician.
With a strong network of supporters who have backed her aspirations since 2006, Anyakoit believes she has a 70% chance of securing the NRM flag. She feels a unique bond with Katakwi voters, claiming at least a 50% alignment with their political landscape since her initial candidacy.
Currently, the NRM flag is held by former Woman MP Hon. Viola Akurut Adome. Anyakoit will compete in the NRM flag bearer elections, potentially alongside the current Woman MP and Vice President, Rtd. Maj. Jessica Rose Alupo, who is running as an independent candidate.
She called for peaceful, respectful, and neutral elections in Katakwi, recalling her victory in the 2011 election against the Vice President. Anyakoit alleged that the results were manipulated in favor of Rtd. Maj. Jessica Rose Alupo Epel, claiming military influence was used to facilitate voter rigging, aided by the election commission and security forces, due to Alupo’s affiliation with the opposition Uganda People’s Congress (UPC).
According to Anyakoit, Katakwi must nurture a new generation of leaders—those who can introduce fresh ideas and support the development of younger leaders.
On Saturday, October 5, 2024, during the National Teachers’ Day celebration at Usuk SS, Rtd. Maj. Godfrey Katamba, the Resident District Commissioner of Katakwi, urged voters to make wise choices in the upcoming elections and called for peaceful, nonviolent electoral processes.
In a message read on behalf of the Vice President, RDC Katamba advised the locals to reflect on their numerous accomplishments and urged voters to keep her in mind for future elections.
