The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), in partnership with Caritas Uganda and the National Forestry Authority (NFA), has launched a major tree planting initiative in Kabale District, ahead of the upcoming World Environment Day celebrations.
Over 7,000 tree seedlings are being planted in selected institutions across the district as part of the preparations for the event. The campaign was officially launched on Friday at Bishop Asil Nursery and Primary School, Kigezi High School Primary, and St. Mary’s College Rushoroza in Kabale Municipality.
The initiative aims to raise environmental awareness among students and local residents while promoting sustainable practices.
Edith Akurut, the Environment Education Officer at NEMA, revealed that more than 7,000 seedlings have been secured for distribution to schools and communities most vulnerable to environmental hazards.
She added that over 200 households are also set to benefit from the ongoing environmental education and restoration campaigns.
Akurut highlighted the region’s escalating environmental challenges, including land degradation, silting, and soil erosion. She warned that increasingly intense rainfall has been triggering mudslides, especially in the hilly areas of Kigezi Sub region, leading to the destruction of homes and loss of lives.

Kirabo Martha Barekye, a Primary Seven pupil at Bishop Asil Nursery and Primary School, praised the tree planting exercise, noting that trees play a crucial role in curbing air pollution and providing oxygen. She called on fellow Ugandans and schools across the country to support the cause of environmental conservation.
Sr. Margaret Tusiime, Headmistress of Bishop Asil Nursery and Primary School, welcomed the campaign, saying it has inspired students to take an active role in protecting the environment.
“This initiative has sparked enthusiasm among our pupils and given them a sense of responsibility towards nature,” Sr. Tusiime said.
