People’s Front for Freedom aspirant for Rukungiri, Ingrid Turinawe, has announced plans to reclaim the parliamentary seat from the ruling NRM.

Speaking to our reporter on Friday, Turinawe said continued imprisonment of Dr Kizza Besigye has strengthened people’s resolve for change.

She noted that residents of Rukungiri are increasingly frustrated by poor service delivery, unemployment, and what she described as “state neglect under NRM leadership.”

She pointed to gaps in healthcare, rising youth unemployment, and deteriorating infrastructure as key challenges that have left many disillusioned.

“People are not just looking for political rhetoric anymore, they want leaders who fight for better roads, functional hospitals, jobs for their children, and an economy that works for ordinary citizens,” Turinawe said. “That is the change I am offering.”

She also criticized what she termed growing intolerance and repression of opposition voices, referencing the continued detention of political figures such as Dr. Kizza Besigye. However, she noted that such actions have only galvanized citizens to push harder for democratic freedoms and equitable governance.

Turinawe’s campaign is expected to reignite political debate in Rukungiri, a constituency historically aligned with the opposition but now grappling with questions about development, representation, and the direction of national politics.

As the election season gathers momentum, voters in Rukungiri are increasingly signaling that the race may be less about party colors and more about who can deliver tangible change.
