SHEEMA: President Yoweri Museveni has directed leaders in the Ankole region to thoroughly investigate cases of extortion involving Parish Development Model (PDM) funds.
Currently on a tour of the region to assess the impact of the PDM, President Museveni acknowledged that the revolving funds are helping many farmers transition from poverty to the money economy.
However, he warned that corruption is undermining the program.
“I will definitely lock up the thieves,” the President cautioned, emphasizing his commitment to rooting out corruption in the initiative.
This directive follows similar actions in other regions. Last month, Museveni ordered the Inspector General of Police to revoke the bonds of corrupt officials in Lango who were extorting money from PDM beneficiaries and ensure their prosecution.
In Acholi last year, he instructed the State House Anti-Corruption Unit to investigate mismanagement and extortion linked to PDM funds.
President Museveni began his Ankole tour in Rubirizi District, where he commended residents for effectively utilizing PDM funds. He reassured them of continued government financial support, noting that the funds belong to them through their Parish SACCOs.
“As I tour these farmers, it is good to see that people have woken up. In the 1960s, only 10% of the population participated in the money economy, while 90% remained asleep. Now, 68% are engaged in the money economy,” he said.
During a visit to PDM beneficiary Desirata Tumusiime’s farm, President Museveni reiterated his long-standing message on wealth creation, urging Ugandans to embrace commercial farming to boost household incomes. He also contributed Shs 10 million to support her enterprise.
In Sheema District, the President toured Pamoja Mixed Farm, owned by retired civil servant Abenawe Honest Bamanyisha, who has expanded her farm from two acres to a thriving enterprise employing 30 people.
Impressed by her progress, Museveni pledged 10 heifers and a Canter truck to support her work.
He applauded Sheema farmers for their outstanding performance in implementing the PDM, recognizing their successful projects as key drivers of socio-economic transformation.
He described them as strategic allies for national development and urged them to stay committed to the NRM’s social-economic strategy, which has significantly impacted their lives.
President Museveni concluded his day with a visit to Mrs. Ahimbisibwe Harriet, a PDM farmer in Ibanda District, further reinforcing his commitment to supporting grassroots economic empowerment through the initiative.
