MBARARA: President Yoweri Museveni has urged leaders in the Ankole region to teach residents how to create wealth, emphasizing that prosperity is within reach and should be fully utilized.

While inaugurating the Ankole Presidential Skilling Hub in Kashari, Mbarara District, President Museveni noted that opportunities for Obugaiga (prosperity) are abundant and advised residents to take advantage of them.

However, he expressed concern about leaders who wait for him to travel from Kampala to educate Ugandans on wealth creation, despite being closer to the people.

Museveni also praised the integration of model demonstration farms into the Presidential Skilling Hubs, saying they would equip young people with practical skills to generate wealth from the land.

“It’s good to see that these hubs are now incorporating model demonstration farms, which will teach our young people how to generate wealth from the land,” he remarked.

The President further revealed the government’s plan to expand the skilling hub by increasing intake, building more dormitories, and introducing electrical and motor mechanics training.

While addressing leaders from the Ankole region in Bushenyi District, President Museveni directed the Ministry of Agriculture to guide residents on proper wetland utilization.

He warned encroachers about the serious consequences of their actions and ordered them to stop farming in wetlands.

Museveni also elaborated on the distinction between wealth and development, urging leaders to guide residents in focusing on wealth accumulation at personal and household levels while the government continues to work on infrastructure development, including roads, electricity, and water.

“It is important for people to understand the difference between wealth and development,” he said.

He encouraged leaders to support initiatives that promote wealth creation, skills development, job creation, and infrastructure improvement while ensuring that funds from the Parish Development Model (PDM) are effectively utilized.

“If the money we put in PDM were instead spent on roads and other infrastructure, we would have good roads and development but not wealth for the people. Wealth and skills are what will create jobs. We plan to increase PDM funding from UGX 100 million to a higher amount, considering that parishes vary in size,” he added.

Vice President Rtd. Maj. Jesca Alupo commended the impact of the Presidential zonal tours, saying they have strengthened citizen participation in wealth creation and development through shared experiences.
