Police in Rukiga District have arrested a local radio presenter for allegedly carrying a toy pistol in public, sparking security concerns among residents.
The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Daglas Natukunda, a presenter at Rukiga FM and resident of Nyangorogoro Village, Kitojo Parish, Rwamucucu Sub County, was arrested on Saturday at around 1:30pm.
According to police, District Police Commander SP Moses Karakire Musinguzi and his team apprehended Natukunda after receiving an intelligence tip-off that he was moving around Kyerero Village, Kandago Parish in Bukinda Sub County with what appeared to be a firearm tucked in his waistband.
The arrest followed a recent community policing meeting at Nyaikunama Football Pitch, where residents raised concern about a man frequently seen in the area carrying a pistol. Security operatives acted on the information and intercepted the suspect, only to discover the weapon was a toy gun.
Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson ASP Elly Maate confirmed the arrest, noting that investigations are underway to establish why the suspect was carrying the imitation firearm.
“We commend the community for the cooperation and encourage them to remain security conscious and vigilant in the fight against crime,” Maate said.
Natukunda is currently in custody as inquiries continue.
