KISORO – The Rotaract Club of Mgahinga has donated gifted Christmas presents to the Batwa communities in Rukeri village, Gitenderi Parish, Nyarusiza sub-county, Kisoro district.
The donation included 100kgs of posho, 25 kgs of rice, soap, and various clothing items such as shoes, jackets, trousers, shirts, and T-shirts.
Chairperson Niyongabo Laban conveyed that these items were sourced from philanthropists like Rotary Club International, Gorilla Highlands Coffee, and Centenary Bank.
Laban emphasized the club’s commitment to uplifting the marginalized Batwa, citing last year’s interaction as the catalyst for planning special celebrations, including the upcoming gift of two goats.
Laban urged the Batwa to use the donated resources responsibly, encouraging sharing among themselves and saving some for Christmas day.
Additionally, he revealed the club’s plan to provide books and scholastic materials in early 2024 to address school dropouts among the Batwa.
Rukeri Serutoki Stephen, the chairperson of the Batwa communities, expressed gratitude to the Rotaract Club of Mgahinga and Laban for their charitable efforts.
Despite acknowledging the club’s support, Stephen urged them to continue attracting other philanthropists to assist the Batwa facing challenges such as famine and sickness after being evicted from their original land in the forests.
